what is fit for task?

Fit for Task covers a wide-range of areas from drug and alcohol testing to driver medicals through to pre-placement medicals and more.

Drug and Alcohol Testing

There are several reasons why drug and alcohol testing should be implemented within workplace policy. The misuse of drugs and alcohol can significantly impact a person’s ability to perform their standard day-to-day activities, leading to reduced productivity, as well as increasing the risk of accidents, putting themselves and others at risk.

JRL Occupational Health Solutions offer drug and alcohol screening on employment, at random and for cause.

We operate strict chain of custody procedures to ensure that the collection, processing and storage of samples is robust.

Drug testing is completed via urine collection while alcohol screening is conducted via one of our alcometers.

Driver Medicals

JRL Occupational Health Solutions offers HGV, LGV and PSV driver medicals as well as forklift truck driver medicals. Safety on the roads is essential for professional drivers, regular medical examinations play a vital role in protecting both your employees and members of the public.

We advise that a medical is carried out upon employment of any role that requires driving. Following this, it is recommended that screening is carried out at regular intervals to pick up on any health problems as they arise.

The driver medicals will screen for the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
  • Sleep disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Psychiatric illness
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Blood pressure conditions
  • Musculoskeletal disease which may interfere with vehicle control
  • Hearing issues
  • Visual disorders
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Stomach or intestinal disorders

Drug and alcohol testing is also available as part of the driver medical.

Forklift Truck Driver Medicals

Forklift truck driver fitness assessments include visual screening, audiology testing, urine analysis, and musculoskeletal assessment. The HSE document, “safety in working with lift trucks” states that it is good practice for all operators and potential operators to be screened for fitness before beginning employment and again at regular intervals, anybody over 65 is recommended to complete such a driver medical on an annual basis.

The forklift truck driver medicals will also screen for the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Psychiatric illness
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Blood pressure conditions
  • Sleep disorders
  • Stomach or intestinal disorders
  • Musculoskeletal disease which may interfere with vehicle control

JRL Occupational Health Solutions will come to your site to complete forklift driver medicals to meet the standards stipulated by the HSE.  The service can be completed in approximately 30 minutes per individual, we can also merge these medicals with statutory health surveillance screening.

Pre-placement medicals

JRL Occupational Health Solutions provide pre-placement medicals in compliance with the Equality Act 2010.

Pre-placement medicals can be completed either via a physical baseline pre-placement medical or by paper-based screening questionnaire.

  • Physical – A physical pre-placement medical health check is usually conducted onsite by one of our Occupational Health Nurses, this type of medical check is often required when employees are exposed to noise, respiratory or skin sensitisers, chemicals or vibrations.

  • Paper-based questionnaire – A paper-based questionnaire is a cost-effective tool to identify any pre-diagnosed conditions that may be affected by work or may also affect an individual’s ability to work. All paper-based questionnaires are screened by our Occupational Health Nurses and any concerns are discussed further via a telephone consultation. The employer will be notified of any medical conditions that may affect the ability to work and of any recommendation or reasonable adjustments that may be required. As an employer, you can then have confidence that the wellbeing of your new member of staff is protected.
Night Worker Assessment

Annual night worker medical assessments are required under the Working Time Directive. Best practice within the United Kingdom however is to conduct a full night worker medical. At JRL Occupational Health Solutions we can offer both a night worker medical assessment which is reviewed by one of our Occupational Health Nurses and can be conducted within a timely manner at competitive rates.

Night worker medicals can be conducted onsite to minimise any disruption to your employees or production schedules, these medicals can also be performed to coincide with your health surveillance schedule.

The night worker medical will screen for the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
  • Stomach or intestinal disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Psychiatric illness
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Sleep disorders
  • Blood pressure conditions
  • Musculoskeletal disease which may interfere with vehicle control
  • Respiratory conditions
Confined Space Assessment

Working in confined spaces can cause problems for employees with certain medical conditions. As regulations place a duty of care on employers when exposed to specific working conditions, the confined space medical is designed to lower the risk of critical incidents.

A confined space medical involves a screening questionnaire, lung function testing (spirometry) and an audiology test. Confined space medicals can be completed onsite to coincide with your health surveillance programme or alternatively can be completed in one of our offices.
